For many people, laptops are an essential part of their lives. They have become a must-have item for anyone who needs to get work done on the go. However, there are some problems that can affect the health of your battery and decrease its lifespan. When it comes to taking the laptop out for some mobile work, battery life is always the most important specification in buying laptops.
In this article, I will be discussing the reasons why laptop batteries die fast and the way to solve them.
Overheating
Overheating is one of the leading causes of damage to laptops and other equipment. When your laptop overheats, its internal components such as the motherboard, and battery get damaged easily and they stop working as well as they should.
When this happens, your battery dies faster than normal because it cannot store energy efficiently anymore. This is how to solve the problem.
Clean up Your Laptop Regularly
The first thing you need to do to solve overheating is clean up your laptop regularly. Dirt and dust can build up on the cooling vents which will reduce airflow around the CPU and GPU and this will lead to overheating. Overheating can cause serious damage to your hardware.
Unnecessary Files Running in The BackGround
There is a possibility that your laptop battery may be draining faster than usual due to unnecessary files running in the background.
If there are too many processes running in the background at any given time, this will affect the performance of your machine negatively and cause it to consume more battery power than normal.
Solving the Problem
If this is the case, then check out the battery settings and disable all the unnecessary processes running in the background. This will help you save some battery power and increase your laptop’s battery life.
You can also use third-party software such as CCleaner or SpeedyFox to clear out unnecessary files from your system and ensure optimum performance at all times.
Not charging enough
If your battery is not being charged enough, then it will not last long enough before it needs to be replaced or recharged again.
This means that if your battery is only getting half an hour of charge per day, then it will only last half an hour before needing to be recharged again. Charge it fully, up to 100% so it can last for many hours before depleting charge.
Old age
The laptop battery is like your car battery, it has a limited life span and will die out after some time.
Buy a New Battery
If you have used your laptop for a long time, it is likely that the battery has become old. In this case, buy another battery to solve this problem.
Even if you’ve just bought your laptop, it’s worth checking if it has an easily removable battery. If so, you can buy a spare battery and carry it around with you when traveling or going away on holiday. That way you’ll always have one charged up and ready to go when your original dies.
Damaged Battery
You may have a damaged battery that needs to be replaced. If you have recently dropped your laptop or spilled something on it, then this could be the cause of the battery charge draining fast.
To determine whether or not your battery is damaged, plug your laptop into an electrical outlet and see if it charges properly. If it doesn’t charge at all and continues to run off its power source (or dies quickly), then it’s likely that your battery has been damaged beyond repair and needs to be replaced with a new one immediately.
Using The Wrong Charger or Cable for Your Laptop
Using the wrong charger for your device can also cause damage to your laptop battery or even worse, fry it completely.
So always use an adapter that has been approved by the manufacturer for your model of device or else you might end up burning out some components inside your laptop like the motherboard or hard drive.
Overcharging Your Battery
Most people tend to leave their laptops plugged in all day long without actually using them. This is not only bad for your laptop’s battery but also bad for your electricity bill.
To avoid this, make sure you unplug your device when it’s fully charged and only plug it back in when you need to use it again.
Laptop Battery Life Expectancy
The average laptop battery life is about 2 to 4 years, with the life of the battery being dependent on how often you use it and how much you use it.
Typically, if you are using your laptop every day for an hour or two, then the battery will last longer than if you leave it plugged in all the time
Tips On How to Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer
If you’re like me, you find it hard to work on your laptop with a dead battery. But I’ve learned some tricks to make my laptop’s battery last longer. Here are some tips that I use:
Keep Your Laptop Cool
The hotter your laptop gets, the faster its battery will drain. To keep your laptop cool, run it on an air conditioner or fan when possible.
Don’t Use It On Your Lap
Cradling your laptop in your lap is never a good idea because it can overheat quickly and drain its battery even faster than usual. Instead, leave it on a desk or table where there is plenty of room for ventilation around all sides of the machine.
Close Unnecessary Programs
If you have multiple programs open at once, then they are using up more resources than if you had only one program open at once (especially if that program is running in the background). So close unnecessary programs when not in use.
